Fleetwood Shows Championship Winning Form in Pro-Am Triumph

Double champion Tommy Fleetwood inspires EGA team to Pro-Am victory with a cumulative medal score of -32

Defending champion Tommy Fleetwood indicated he has returned in the same masterful form that saw him claim back-to-back victories at the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship presented by EGA in 2017 and 2018 with a comprehensive victory in the annual pre-tournament morning Pro-Am (Tuesday, 15 January).

Fleetwood continued his love affair with the iconic Abu Dhabi Golf Club course with a versatile display that inspired his team to a winning total score of 32-under.

The victory serves as an ominous warning to the likes of fellow competitors, Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson and Henrik Stenson, who will all be looking to take home the Falcon Trophy for the first time when the main event starts tomorrow morning (Wednesday, 16 January).

Speaking on his prospects this year, Fleetwood said: “This is a course where if you play well, you can do well, and if you don’t, you kind of struggle. For the last two years I’ve played well and tee-to-greened it to death. I made very few bogeys and ultimately that’s led to me winning a couple of times. That’s not to say it will be the same this year. The rough is a little thicker so it is going to be a different test.”

Fleetwood tees off tomorrow at 07:40am alongside fellow Brit, Tyrrell Hatton, and Ryder Cup rival, Brooks Koepka, in a group that is sure to set the course alight. With another victory under his belt, Fleetwood enters the first round of the tournament with confidence at an all-time high as he bids to write his name in the history books by becoming the first player to win the trophy three years in a row.

First staged in 2006, the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship presented by EGA is being hosted at the iconic Abu Dhabi Golf Club for the 14th consecutive year from January 16-19, 2019.
