Championship Village Activities Announced at 2019 Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship Presented by EGA

Seven exciting activities will give spectators opportunity to test their sporting prowess in a fun and family themed environment

The Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship presented by EGA today announces details of the free sports activities that will be available for spectators in the tournament’s Championship Village, an area of Abu Dhabi Golf Club that is specially set aside to provide hours of entertainment for families and their children. Residents and visitors will get the opportunity to participate in a variety of sports activities[, with a selection of prizes on offer for the winners.] The Village also offers a wide range of food and beverages, catering to all tastes.

The Championship Village has long been part of the tradition of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship presented by EGA and is a vital element of its overall appeal. This year the event has become part of the prestigious Rolex Series, making it one of the premium tournaments on The European Tour.

The seven sporting activities taking place in the Championship Village will be:

Rugby – Participants retrieve a ball from a foam pit, weave through tackle bags, negotiate a tyre challenge, then hit and roll of each of the standing targets before scoring a try under the posts.

Golf – Participants take a total of three shots into a replica of the 18th green and pin flag.

Cycling – Two contestants each sit on a static cycle, and their pedaling drives replica scaletrix models in a 10 lap race around a specially designed circuit, with points scored according to the time taken to complete the 10 laps.

Tennis – Participants are faced with a set of moving and static targets on a range 4 metres away, behind a standard tennis net. The aim is to hit as many targets as possible in one minute.

Badminton Participants faces shuttlecocks from the opposite side of the court and return them over the net.

Street Golf – Players must complete a street themed putting course in as few shots as possible

Future Falcons – Youngsters can also take part in the Future Falcons programme, an initiative that seeks to promote grass roots golf in Abu Dhabi, by encouraging youngsters from the age of 8 to 16 to take up the game in a series of different skill challenges. In the Championship Village, the Future Falcons tent will see participants test their skill in a chipping challenge and putting shuttle. The chipping challenge will allow participants to practice their chipping using four targets to aim for on the range. The putting shuttle game will be an activity to help with putting technique and for participants to compete against others in their group.

H.E. Aref Al Awani, General Secretary of Abu Dhabi Sports Council, said: “Once again we are providing resident and visiting fans with a host of exciting entertainment that caters for all members of the family. The Championship Village is very much in keeping with the objective of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship presented by EGA offering something for everyone. Parents and children can both relax in a fun and light-hearted environment, which nevertheless draws out everyone’s competitive instincts. More broadly, this reflects Abu Dhabi’s recognition that sport in general plays a fundamental part of a healthy and active life, as well as providing a means of bringing families together.”

Every year we see queues of people enthusiastically hitting golf and tennis balls, and throwing themselves at tackle bags, and generally adding to the sense of fun and community that the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship presented by EGA stands for. I would like to congratulate the Abu Sports Council and the European Tour for their continued efforts in making the tournament as memorable and enjoyable as possible for both players and spectators.”
